DETAILS
FURTHER DETAILS
Fondazione Triulza, Slow/d and CNA Emilia-Romagna are bringing together small artisan firms and young designers to create a chair for the Civil Society Pavilion in an innovative process to be used for the first time ever. The aim of this project is to convey the vast and marvellous multiplicity of the world in which the work of designers and that of artisans intersect as they are coordinated to create a unique product that, through a special variable in the winning design, will then be made into 100 “different copies”. The result will be 100 different chairs based on the same design, transformed into 100 one-of-a-kind copies through the hands of each of the artisans involved. 100 Different Copies is an interactive project and a collaborative effort. Its value lies in the differences and in its innovative approach to design, used here as a catalyst for a chain that is sustainable for both society and the environment. It is an open source project that concerns itself with local areas and the social sustainability of production. Indeed, it is a project that puts emphasis on the social responsibility of artistic creation, which is, in this case, design applied to social innovation: the project involves thinkers and makers, designers and artisans in a collaborative process to produce an open source chair that is not just an object, but a project. Slow/d will gather the projects on its website and support the selection and prototyping, the transformation of the design into a product and the subsequent retail sale of additional copies that the same artisans will craft on demand. Call for entries The aim of the international call is to create a wooden chair to be used for the restaurant in the Civil Society Pavilion at the 2015 Expo. At least 100 copies of the chair will be produced, and each will differ in form. In practical terms, the one winning design will include a variable that makes it possible to produce the chair in 100 or more one-of-a-kind copies.
Materials and Technology The chair’s structural parts must be in wood, but without any limitations to the format of the wood (plywood, laminate, etc). Rather than exotic woods that are difficult to source and therefore less sustainable, local materials should be used (e.g., spruce, larch, beechwood, ash, birch, etc.). The use of hardware and attachments made out of other materials is permitted. The project must be designed so that the product is durable and sturdy: thousands of people will be using the copies produced and placed in the Pavilion, not only during the EXPO 2015, but afterwards as well, as Cascina Triulza plans to continue activities after the EXPO. Variability How can you produce 100 unique chairs based on one design? This is the true challenge of the call. We want to give designers as much freedom as possible, so we will only cite a few examples to clarify: size: there could be an element (or more than one) of a different size in each copy finishing: each copy could feature a varying pattern, different colour or combinations anything that is not against the rules In any event, participants should keep in mind that 100 different artisans will be producing the (approximately) 100 chairs: it is essential to understand the dynamics of the crafting process (even if it is not necessarily manual). Participation The call is addressed to young professional designers, architectects and engineers born from the 1st of January, 1980. In case of groups every member must have been born from the 1st of January, 1980. “Professionals” include anyone who works prevalently in the field of design and the creation of products for interior design. Our aim is to extend the chance to participate to those who are not officially recognized with specific titles or who do not fit into specific categories, while also excluding those who are unable to correctly express their design ideas in 2D and 3D and do not have experience in product prototyping. In order to ensure that this opportunity is accessible to all and sustainable at the same time, a €29 submission fee will be charged for each individual design proposal submitted, due upon project registration (the designer or group of designers may register separately and before submitting the design proposal). Group participation is allowed, in which case the group representative will indicate the names of the other members of the group at the time of registration (complete instructions will be provided in the registration form). How to Partecipate Q&A - From 16 December 2014 to 15 January 2015, questions about the call and requests for clarifications may be sent to 100dc@slowd.co. As similar questions are received, the most frequently asked questions will be published along with the answers on a Slow/d web page devoted to the 100 Different Copies project. Entries submission - Design proposals may be uploaded to Slow/d’s website from 20 to 31 January 2015 (deadline is midnight on 31 January) on the page devoted to the call, following the instructions provided on the website. If you already have a Slow/d profile, the active call will appear in your user dashboard. You must include images and a short text with your submission. Upload no more than 10 .jpg images, in a square format, 1280×1280 pixels, maximum 2 Mb per image, without any kind of watermarks, logos or other elements that could be used to identify the designer/group. The images must include: – an overall view of the project; – details showing that critical aspects have been technologically resolved; – at least one dimensioned drawing of the whole. Selection – The judges reserve the right to request explanations concerning the technical and technological aspects of the projects submitted during the judging process (notification of any questions will be sent via email and a reply is required within 24 hours of the judges’ request). In order to protect participants’ privacy and ensure the fairness of the competition, only the judges may view the submitted design proposals. After the winners are announced, the projects may be viewed by the rest of the Slow/d community for a peer review within the Slow/d community (and not outside of it) for the awarding of the Slow/d appreciation prize. The project to be produced will be chosen at the promoters’ undisputable judgment through the judges for the call. Winners – The winner will be announced by 8 February 2015 via email. The winning designer or group of designers must provide A3 formatted working drawings of the product in digital format by and no later than 15 February 2015 (the winner will receive instructions for sending the drawings directly). Any technical details that have not been properly resolved or that prove problematic in the prototyping stage may be corrected by Slow/d’s technical team, which will consult with the designer, but may in any case make decisions independently so the product’s feasibility is not compromised. Prototyping – On 16 February, a prototyping workshop will be organized with an artisan appointed by the organizer; the designer is invited to participate personally or, if this is not possible, via videoconferencing. The designer (or one per group), will be assisted in organizing logistics for the workshop, the methods of which will be shared at a later date. Production – 100 copies will be produced with the selected artisans between March and April 2015 under the supervision of Slow/d’s technical team, with the support of CNA Emilia-Romagna. Intellectual Property In order to spread awareness about the importance of sharing and collaboration, the organization has decided to release the project under an open source licence. The aim is to allow anyone to reproduce the project, thereby encouraging the widespread diffusion of the idea and promoting its designer. In this way, the designer will be remunerated when the project is downloaded for a fee (the project will be released under a Creative Commons licence), or when a copy is ordered, which will be produced by the same artisans involved in the project, via Slow/d’s design distribution website. The projects will always remain the exclusive property of the designers who created them, but the images may be used to promote the experience. Commercialization of the winning project Online sales will begin when the Pavilion opens, enabling an international public to purchase the chair either as a download of the project or as a finished product created on demand by artisans. For every download, the designer will receive 60% of the retail price, while for each sale of a finished product, the designer or group of designers will receive a royalty equal to 10% of the production cost (as the production price could potentially differ from one artisan to the next). The winning product will be subject to an exclusive distribution clause at these financial terms for 24 months. During this period, additional promotional initiatives and events may be organized for the product through Slow/d and its network of partners. Judging criteria The projects will be judged according to the following criteria: formal freshness variability concept technical feasibility reasonable manufactuirng cost emphasis on craftsmanship sustainability accessibility Judging Panel Members of the judging panel: Odoardo Fioravanti – Product Designer Giampaolo Artoni – Civil Society Pavilion Décor Curator Andrea Cattabriga – Co-founder and CEO of Slow/d Sebastiano Longaretti – Co-founder and COO of Slow/d Alessandro Battaglia – Wood Coordinator for CNA Emilia Romagna Ambrogio Rossari – President of ADI (Industrial Design Association) of Lombardy Alessandro Sarfatti – Entrepreneur Premi e valorizzazione Winning Project (product produced) Technical Solution Award Variability Award Craftsmanship Award Slow/d Community Award Honourable Mentions Winning project The winning designer or group, selected by a panel of judges with the assistance of the artisans involved: – will have over 100 copies of their chair made and displayed in the Pavilion (with announcement via the official channels) – will receive a cash prize of €3,000; – will have their project announced by the press offices of the Pavilion and partners, reaching thousands of online and print news outlets around the world; – will receive 10% royalties on production in accordance with Slow/d’s terms and conditions for products acquired on an on-demand basis on its website; – will participate in an awards ceremony during the Expo at the Civil Society Pavilion restaurant, where the chairs will be used.
Honourable Mentions The Judges will select a small number of projects that will be included in the catalogue, the official project selection and the graphics used in the catalogue, and that will be part of the international press kit. We have not specified the exact number of projects to be included in advance because we do not want to limit any good projects worthy of publication; however, we believe that 5 to 20 projects will be mentioned. Other Awards Other projects that most effectively exhibit certain special characteristics will be selected for honourable mention: Technical Solution Award: for an innovative technical solution; Variability Award: for a particularly effective variability concept; Craftsmanship Award: for the outstanding ability to highlight the essential elements of contemporary craftsmanship; Slow/d Community Award: for receiving the most appreciation from the Slow/d community of designers and businesses. Disqualification A project will be irrevocably disqualified from the competition if: violates third party rights (e.g., copy of an existing product); it is a design that is already commercialized. Deadlines 15 December – International call 16 December > 15 January – Q&A 20 January > 31 January – submission of design proposals 8 February – the winner and honourable mentions are announced 16 > 20 February – prototyping workshop
